Ofloxacin is a commonly used antibiotic, and the following side effects may occur during use:
Gastrointestinal reaction
This is a common side effect. Patients may have symptoms of nausea and vomiting, mainly because the drug stimulates the gastrointestinal mucosa and affects the normal peristalsis and digestive function of the gastrointestinal tract.
Some patients also have diarrhea, which is due to the drug may change the balance of bacteria in the gut, leading to intestinal dysfunction.
In addition, there may be abdominal discomfort, such as abdominal pain or bloating, which may be because the drug irritates the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract or affects the normal digestion and absorption process of the gastrointestinal tract.
Central nervous system response
Some patients experience headaches after using ofloxacin, which may be because the drug affects the contraction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain, or interferes with neurotransmitters.
Dizziness is also a more common reaction, mainly due to the effect the drug may have on the balance receptors or balance regulation mechanisms of the central nervous system.
Insomnia or drowsiness may also occur. Ofloxacin may affect the excitability of nerve cells and alter the brain's sleep-wake cycle, which can lead to insomnia or sleepiness.
In rare cases, convulsions may be caused because the drug produces a more severe stimulation of the central nervous system, affecting the normal electrical activity of neurons.
anaphylaxis
Skin rash is the most common form of ofloxacin allergy and is usually erythema, papular, and may be accompanied by itching. This is because the body's immune system recognizes ofloxacin as a foreign harmful substance and initiates an immune response, leading to inflammation in the skin.
Severe allergic reactions may result in angioneurotic edema, which is a localized edema of the skin and underlying tissue, mainly because of increased vascular permeability due to the allergic reaction.
There is also the possibility of anaphylactic shock, which is the most serious allergic reaction and, although extremely rare, can be life-threatening. Anaphylactic shock is mainly due to a series of symptoms such as blood vessel dilation, blood pressure drop, breathing difficulty and so on.
Other side effects
Some patients may have abnormal liver function, such as elevated aminotransferase. This is because the drug may cause certain damage to liver cells during liver metabolism.
It may also cause damage to kidney function, such as increased creatinine. This is because when the drug is excreted by the kidney, it may affect the nephron and interfere with the normal filtration and reabsorption function of the kidney.
Occasionally, Achilles tendinitis or tendon rupture can occur, especially in athletes or people who regularly exercise vigorously. This may be because the drugs can affect the synthesis of collagen fibers in the Achilles tendon, causing the tendon to lose strength.
The use of ofloxacin may lead to blood system abnormalities, such as leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, etc., because the drug has a certain inhibitory effect on bone marrow hematopoietic function.
When using ofloxacin, if any unpleasant side effects occur, you should seek medical attention promptly and inform your doctor that you are using the drug.
