How to Tell If a Bottle Is PET?

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is one of the most widely used plastics in food and beverage packaging, especially for water bottles, juice bottles, and clear containers. But how can you tell if a bottle is made from PET?

Here are a few practical ways to identify PET bottles, based on visual cues, labeling, and material properties.

1. Look for the Resin Identification Code

Most plastic bottles have a recycling symbol-usually a triangle with a number inside-printed on the bottom.

PET bottles are marked with the number "1" inside the triangle.

It may also be labeled as "PET" or "PETE."

This is the most direct and reliable way to identify PET material.

2. Check the Appearance and Clarity

PET bottles are usually clear, glossy, and lightweight. Compared to HDPE (which is more opaque), PET has high transparency and often feels smoother to the touch.
Common examples: mineral water bottles, iced tea bottles, and salad dressing containers.

3. Feel the Rigidity

PET bottles are stiff but flexible, and they tend to bounce back after slight pressure. They hold their shape well but can be easily compressed by hand, unlike thicker HDPE or PP bottles used for lotions or milk.

4. Use the Flame Test (Only for Lab Use)

In professional environments, materials can be identified by carefully burning a small sample:

PET burns with a yellow flame and drips, giving off a sweet, fruity smell.
⚠️ Note: This test should only be performed by trained staff in safe laboratory conditions.

5. Ask the Manufacturer or Supplier

If you're not sure what material the bottle is made from, it's best to consult your supplier. Reputable manufacturers like Mingda clearly state the material in the product specification and offer food-grade PET bottles with full certification (FDA, ISO, etc.).
