How to Store HDPE and PET Plastic Bottles Properly — Do They Expire?

May 22, 2025 Leave a message

At Hubei Mingda Plastics Products Co., Ltd., we specialize in manufacturing HDPE and PET bottles for a wide range of applications. While plastic bottles are durable, proper storage is important to maintain their shape, appearance, and performance over time.

✅ Recommended Storage Conditions

To keep HDPE and PET bottles in good condition:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, ideally at room temperature (15–30°C / 59–86°F).

  • Avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure, which may cause discoloration or surface degradation.

  • Keep away from heat sources or freezing temperatures, especially for PET bottles, which are more sensitive to heat.

  • Use original packaging to prevent dust, deformation, or contamination.

  • Do not stack excessively to avoid bottle distortion.

🕒 Shelf Life of Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles don't technically "expire," but they do have an ideal usage window:

  • HDPE bottles: Best used within 12–18 months

  • PET bottles: Best used within 18–24 months

After this period, materials may become brittle, lose transparency (for PET), or slightly change in dimensions, which may affect sealing or product compatibility.

📦 Inventory Tip

We recommend following the FIFO principle (First In, First Out) to ensure older stock is used first, reducing the risk of long-term storage impact.
