How to improve the drop resistance of PET bottles by design?

Optimize bottle shape
Use a circular design: The circular shape is one of the most conducive to fall resistance. Because when the round bottle is impacted by an external force, the impact force can be evenly dispersed along the circumference. For example, the common mineral water PET bottle is mostly round, and when it falls from a certain height, the impact force will spread around, reducing the possibility of local stress concentration leading to rupture.
Avoid sharp corners: Bottles with sharp corners are prone to stress concentration at the corners. Sharp corners should be minimized in the design. If the bottle needs to have a non-circular appearance, it can be designed with a streamlined or curved transition. For example, some special-shaped PET perfume bottles, their corners use a soft curve transition, so that when it is hit by external forces, the force can be more evenly distributed on the surface of the bottle, rather than concentrated on the sharp corner, thereby improving the fall resistance.
Reasonable control of bottle wall thickness
Increase the wall thickness of key parts: The wall thickness can be appropriately increased for the parts of the bottle that are vulnerable to impact, such as the bottom of the bottle and the bottleneck. The bottom of the bottle is the first part of the bottle to touch the ground when it is dropped, while the bottleneck is the more fragile and vulnerable area. By thickening these areas, the bottle has more material to absorb and disperse the impact when it is hit. For example, some PET bottles containing high-end alcohol will be designed with a relatively thick bottom to prevent the bottle from breaking when placed or dropped.
Gradient wall thickness design: Using gradient wall thickness design is also an effective method. From the bottom of the bottle to the body to the mouth of the bottle, the wall thickness can gradually change according to the stress situation of different parts. For example, the wall thickness in the middle of the bottle can be relatively thin, because this part is less directly impacted under normal circumstances, and gradually thicker near the bottom and mouth of the bottle, which can save material costs and improve the overall drop resistance of the bottle.
Consider bottle structure strengthening
Adding reinforcing bars: The design of reinforcing bars on the bottle body is a common way to enhance the resistance to falls. Reinforcement can be longitudinal, transverse, or reticulated. These stiffeners can increase the rigidity of the bottle, so that it is not easy to deform and break when subjected to external forces. For example, some large-capacity PET plastic drums will have a ring reinforcement around the barrel body, which can effectively resist deformation and protect the barrel body when the barrel is collided or squeezed.
Double layer structure design: The bottle with double layer structure can improve the drop resistance. The inner layer is PET material, which is used to contain liquid, and the outer layer can be a material with good toughness or buffering properties. The outer structure acts as a buffer and protects the inner layer of PET when the bottle is dropped. For example, some special purpose PET bottles, the outer layer of soft rubber material, when the bottle dropped, the outer rubber first contact the ground, absorbing most of the impact, reducing the risk of the inner layer of PET rupture.
